The ASPPH Welch-Rose Award recognizes the highest standards of leadership and scholarship in public health and honors individuals in two categories: Distinction in Public Health – individuals who have made lifetime contributions to the improvement of the health of the public. Excellence in Academic Public Health Service – individuals who have made extraordinary and lasting contributions in advancing education in public health. The award also honors Drs. Wickliffe Rose and William Henry Welch who’s seminal 1915 report continues to serve as a central reference point for the design of academic public health.

Criteria for Award


The Welch-Rose Award is given annually to an individual to honor their lifetime of public health service, and/or for their extraordinary contributions to the academic public health community

Eligibility


  • Demonstration of innovative leadership for enhancing excellence, health equity, and inclusiveness in public health.
  • Any individual who has made a significant and lasting contribution to academic public health, or a lifetime contribution to the field of public health.
  • The nominee does not necessarily need to be a current or past faculty member of a CEPH-accredited school or program.
  • Current ASPPH deans and primary representatives will not be considered.

Required Materials


Nominations can be submitted by any public health professional. The Award Selection Committee may also solicit nominations. The nomination package must contain the following materials: 

  • Nominee and nominator contact information; 
  • An overview statement identifying either the extraordinary contributions to the academic public health community of the nominee, or lifelong service in public health (limit 800 words);  
  • Nominee’s curriculum vitae.

Review & Selection


Each nomination is reviewed by a selection committee comprised of the ASPPH Executive Board. 

ASPPH leadership and the committee will discuss each nomination and determine the awardee.
