Abby Cabrera, MPH

Community Health, Health Promotion and Communication

What inspired you to study to public health?

I aspire to improve the overall health and well-being of populations through public health practice. Previously as a pre-med student, I dreamed of navigating patients through their ailments and health issues. However, I came to realize I wanted to use my skills and talents to create an impact and positive change in groups instead of individuals, and be able to empower individuals and populations so that they can be their own health navigators.

What has been the single most rewarding experience of your career/studies so far?

I collaborated with community leaders to create a health information event that reached out to the community. The ability to not just take from a community, but give back has been rewarding.

What is the one piece of advice you wish someone had given you when you were starting out in public health?

Be prepared for more questions than answers.

What do you think is the biggest challenge that the public health field should be focusing on?

We should be focusing on informing the general public about public health and what it stands for.
