On Friday, ASPPH submitted comments on a request for information issued by the NIH Office of Disease Prevention (ODP) related to the development of its FY 2019-2023 strategic plan. ASPPH was supportive of the five draft strategic priorities, which largely mirror the ODP’s existing priorities. The Association suggested that ODP add to its strategic goals the assessment of prevention research workforce needs and supporting the allocation of NIH training resources to meet those needs. ASPPH stressed that, “As valuable as the proposed strategic priorities are, they will all be for naught unless the NIH investment in prevention research is increased significantly. The ODP should play a central role in marshalling NIH resources for prevention research, even if those resources are not allocated to or managed by the ODP directly.” Members of the ASPPH Research Committee provided critical input on the Association’s response.
