Colorado Faculty Member Appointed as Adviser to NIH Director

Dr. Spero Mason, distinguished professor of community and behavioral health, and director of the Centers for American Indian and Alaska Native Health at the Colorado School of Public Health was appointed to the National Institute for Health Advisory Committee to the Director by Dr. Francis Collins. President Obama appointed Dr. Collins as director of NIH in 2009.

The Advisory Committee to the Director provides advice on matters pertinent to the NIH mission and responsibilities in the conduct and support of biomedical research, medical science, and biomedical communications.

Under the direction of Dr. Manson, the CAIANH center has received more than $60 million in NIH grants and contracts, and has published more than 350 peer-reviewed journal articles. Since 1998, CAIANH has trained nearly 50 American Indian and Alaska Native MDs and PhDs to become highly successful, independent scientists.
