Colorado Report Shows $35 Million in Hospital Charges Due to Vaccine-Preventable Diseases

A recent report co-authored by Dr. Edwin Asturias, associate director for the Center for Global Health at the Colorado School of Public Health, shows that 472 Colorado children were hospitalized with vaccine-preventable diseases in 2015, resulting in $35 million in hospital and emergency department charges.

The report also found that less than 50 percent of children in 17 Colorado counties are up to date on routine immunizations. Influenza (flu) was reported for 369 hospitalizations and 4,045 emergency department visits amongst Colorado children in 2015, which resulted in more than $25 million in charges.
