Colorado School of Public Health: Older Adults with Gastrointestinal Infections Display Fewer Symptoms

Colorado School of Public Health researchers Ms. Alice White research instructor and lead author, and Dr. Elaine Scallan, professor of epidemiology, joined forces with colleagues in in Canada, Australia, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to study enteric infections, or those affecting the gastrointestinal tract. They found infections can present differently in older people compared with younger individuals.

The recommendation of the study, led by Ms. White, is for a lower threshold for diagnostic testing in elderly patients who are suspected of harboring enteric infections, in order to potentially reduce the likelihood of complications and hospitalization.
