Columbia Associate Professor Co-Authors Report on Peace Corps Volunteer Protection Act

First Response Action (FRA), an initiative led by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, released its first “report card” assessing the Peace Corps’ efforts to implement the Kate Puzey Peace Corps Volunteer Protection Act. The report identifies major gaps in the agency’s sexual assault programs and assigned an overall grade of “C” to the Peace Corps’ compliance with the law. Dr. Karestan Koenen, associate professor of epidemiology at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and a former Peace Corps volunteer, is actively involved in the work of First Response Action and a co-author of the report. Dr. Koenen was raped while serving in Niger and is a strong advocate for the Peace Corps to promptly and fully apply the law.
