Columbia Calls for Academic Institutions to Embrace Implementation Science and Advance Research

While researchers at leading universities have made major scientific discoveries that advance understanding of the global HIV epidemic, translating the benefits of this knowledge into better health for communities around the world has been left to government agencies and non-governmental organizations. In the latest issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Wafaa El-Sadr, professor of epidemiology and medicine and director of ICAP at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, in collaboration with co-authors Ms. Neena Philip, and Dr. Jessica Justman, makes a compelling argument for academic institutions to remain connected to their discoveries as they transcend the walls of universities and inform practice at multi-lateral agencies, local governments, communities, schools, and families.
