Columbia: Launches Yusuf Hamied Fellowships and Announces Inaugural class of Fellows

Columbia Mailman and Board member and public health champion Dr. Yusuf Hamied, in partnership with the Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai, launched the Yusuf Hamied Fellowships to advance interdisciplinary research on urgent public health issues in India. Through short-term residencies in India, faculty Fellows pursue joint research with public health scientists and researchers in Indian educational institutions. In addition, Fellows from peer institutions in India spend time at Columbia Mailman. On March 29, Dean Linda Fried announced the inaugural class of Yusuf Hamied Fellows:

Both a world-renowned scientist and chairman of Cipla, a global pharmaceuticals company, Dr. Hamied has spent much of his career working to ensure access to generic AIDS drugs and other life-saving medications, regardless of patients’ ability to pay. He was influential in pioneering the development of multi-drug combination pills for human immunodeficiency virus/ acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) and tuberculosis (TB).

Dr. K. Srinath Reddy, president of the Public Health Foundation of India, will give the inaugural Yusuf Hamied Distinguished Lecture on April 24.
