CUNY Researchers Describe Model for Promoting Health of Diverse Urban College Students

In a new report in the Journal of American College Health, Dr. Nicholas Freudenberg, distinguished professor of public health at the CUNY School of Public Health at Hunter College, and his co-authors describe Healthy CUNY, a six year initiative to improve the health of CUNY students, faculty, and staff; create healthier campus environments and policies; and identify and reduce health-related obstacles to college achievement. Founded by the School of Public Health and the CUNY Chancellors Office in 2007, Healthy CUNY has helped to implement CUNY’s new tobacco-free campus policy; reviewed food services and vending contracts at CUNY and made recommendations for improvements; and surveyed CUNY undergraduates to ascertain the prevalence of food insecurity, housing instability, and psychological problems.
