Drexel: New Grant to Assess Health of Mexican Immigrants to the United States

Dr. Ana Martinez-Donate, an associate professor in the Department of Community Health and Prevention at the Drexel University Dornsife School of Public Health, was awarded a 5-year, $3.1 million R01 grant, from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in June 2019.

The award will be used for the “HIV Risk and Access to Healthcare Among Mexican Immigrants” project. Dr. Martinez-Donate will lead a research team that will set up an observatory of health to monitor the health of Mexican immigrants coming across the border into the United States and/or returning to Mexico. Through a series of surveys, this project will assess their health status and access to services related to human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS), mental health, substance use, and chronic diseases.

Dr. Martinez-Donate has also conducted previous research on access to care on immigrants crossing the border into the U.S. or returning to Mexico.
