Drexel Researchers Receive Grant to Assess Costs and Benefits of Urban Public Spaces

Dr. Anneclaire De Roos, associate professor of environmental and occupational Health at Drexel University Dornsife School of Public Health, along with Dr. Patrick Gurian, associate professor at the Drexel College of Engineering, are participating in a research synthesis on the health, economic, environmental, and social impacts of urban public spaces that will describe the state of the field by delineating what we know and do not know about the benefits and costs of urban spaces that are free and open to the public. The assessment will include a review of parks, libraries, recreation centers, playgrounds, community centers, gardens, trails, and plazas. The project is funded by a William Penn Foundation grant of $269,000 to inform strategy, monitoring, and evaluation efforts, while benefiting the broader field.
