Dr. Leah Schinasi, an epidemiologist in the Urban Health Collaborative at the Drexel University Dornsife School of Public Health, was recently awarded the American Heart Association (ASH) 2019 Career Development Award. The $231,000 award supports highly promising healthcare and academic professionals who explore innovative questions that will provide preliminary data and training necessary to assure the applicants future success as a research scientist.
Dr. Schinasi is an environmental and occupational epidemiologist. Her work focuses on the acute and chronic health effects of exposures encountered in the environment and workplace. Her AHA research will focus on the challenges and opportunities associated with urbanization — specifically, urban greening. Dr. Schinasi will leverage sixteen years’ worth of geospatial and survey data in Philadelphia and combine them with mortality records to quantify the effect of greenspace on Cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and the mechanisms that underlie the relationship. The innovative research she conducts will produce empirical data to support city-wide planning strategies and interventions to promote cardiovascular health.Tags: Friday Letter Submission
