Mr. Mutuku Mwanthi, East Tennessee State University College of Public Health alumnus, has been named the Director of the School of Public Health for the University of Nairobi in Kenya. Dr. Mwanthi is a 1982 graduate of the Master of Science in Environmental Health program.

The School of Public Health at University of Nairobi in Kenya was established in September 2010 and was officially launched by the Vice Chancellor in February 2011. It is one of the four constituent schools of the College of Health Sciences. The school is located within the College of Health Sciences complex at Kenyatta National Hospital. It has a mandate to deal with the emerging public health challenges, meet the high demand for training on public health issues, and contribute to public health research and community health development.
When asked about his time at East Tennessee State University, Mr. Mwanthi stated, “My education at ETSU equipped me with high standard theoretical knowledge and relevant skills which have continued to enable me to combat the existing and emerging local and global environmental health challenges.”
Mr. Mwanthi has authored or coauthored more than 60 scientific publications and 4 book chapters. He has served as an external examiner in more than 15 universities in Kenya and in the Eastern and Southern African Countries. Looking back to his time in the program, he concluded, “The skills attained from the ETSU Environmental Health Program have given me a niche which I have been able to effectively teach or share my expertise to my undergraduate and graduate students and many other stakeholders.”
