Since 2009, the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues has provided advice to President Obama on bioethical issues arising from advances in biomedicine and related areas of science and technology. The Commission has sought to identify and promote policies and practices that ensure that research, health care delivery, and technological innovation are conducted in a socially and ethically responsible manner. Today’s faculty and leaders of public health programs and schools now have access to this rich portfolio of material to expand the skills, competencies, and discourse. Dr. Lisa M. Lee, Executive Director for the Commission will discuss the efforts of the Commission, its scope, and how its 10 reports shaped the teaching tools, user guides, deliberative scenarios, and case studies to bring real time democratic deliberation and ethical scenarios into the classroom. Dr. Lee will discuss the latest commission report, Bioethics for Every Generation, and its recommendations for incorporating deliberation and ethics education into curricula across the lifespan, from pre-K through professional training and beyond.
