ASPPH Presents Delta Omega 2020 Innovative Curriculum Awardee Webinar: Implementing Community-Based Practice Through Civic Engagement Projects

Join ASPPH as we spotlight the winner of the Delta Omega 2020 Innovative Curriculum Award.  Dr. Tyler Derreth and Dr. Maggie Wear,  Alpha chapter – Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, will present, “Implementing Community-Based Practice Through Civic Engagement Projects.”

Can community-based work be done without physically being in the community? Drs. Derreth and Wear will discuss the coursework they designed in which public health students develop and utilize skills in evaluation in partnership with Baltimore community-based organizations. Further, they will explore the innovative instructional framework employed in this course – Critical Online Service-learning (COSL). COSL is based upon three principles, dialogic communication, cross-contextual reflections, and positioning oneself as an ally.

Delta Omega, the public health honorary society, created the annual Innovative Curriculum Award more than 10 years ago in order to applaud the important role public health graduate education plays in the development and maintenance of a strong, active, and well-prepared public health profession. Faculty from schools and programs with active chapters may apply for this award, as long as the respective chapter approves of their submission.

    Tyler Derreth, PhD

    Dr. Tyler Derreth is the Associate Director of SOURCE and faculty in the department of Health, Behavior, and Society at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.  His research concentrates on urban community–university partnerships, critical pedagogies, and equitable educational practices.

    Maggie P. Wear, PhD

    Dr. Maggie P. Wear, Assistant Scientist department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She has two research focuses, one on the contribution of polysaccharides to fungal pathogenesis, and the other on critical thinking and societal impacts on science education.
