Columbia Event Features Talk by Pioneer of Generic HIV Pharmaceuticals in India

Dr. Yusef K. Hamied, considered the leader of generic pharmaceuticals in India and a pioneer in the global fight against HIV and AIDS through his efforts to reduce the international cost of these drugs, will deliver a talk at the Mailman School of Public Health titled, “And Access for All–Global – Lessons Learned from the Global HIV Response.”

Dr. Hamied is a pharmaceutical chemist, philanthropist, and chairman of Indian generics maker Cipla Ltd., the pharmaceuticals company founded in 1935. Hamied was a featured subject of a recent documentary film, Fire in the Blood (2013), which depicts how he and others campaigned to compel the world’s major pharmaceutical giants to make antiretroviral drugs available to people with HIV and AIDS as generic drugs. Hamied is a commissioner of UNAIDS, and is the recipient of several lifetime achievement awards.

Dean Linda Fried, MD, MPH; Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons Dean Lee Goldman, MD, MPH; and Kenneth X. Robbins, MD, biographer and scholar on India will make introductory remarks. A panel, moderated by Wafaa El-Sadr, MD, MPH, University Professor and director of ICAP, will follow Dr. Hamied’s presentation.The event will also feature excerpts from the documentary, Fire in the Blood.
