Georgia State: Power and Equity in Global Health Research – GRAND Friday Lecture | Friday, February 21

Georgia State University School of Public Health presents the Global Research Against Non-Communicable Disease (GRAND) Friday Lecture

Topic:
Power and Equity in Global Health Research

Featuring:
Dr. Bethany Hedt-Gauthier
Associate Professor
Harvard Medical School

Power dynamics in global health research lead to inequities in the opportunities for contribution and professional growth for scientists from low- and middle-income countries, ultimately diminishing the quality of science and impact of the work, distorting priorities, and being morally wrong. In this talk, Dr. Hedt-Gauthier will describe how systems and stakeholders, including funders, journals and editors, and academic institutions shape or reinforce these power dynamics. She will describe her own experience as an academic, building a global surgery research portfolio and describe reflexive activities to redress these power imbalances to produce more inclusive and better quality research.
