Maryland Forum: The New Face of Tobacco

The Association of Graduate Students in Public Health at the University of Maryland will host an academic forum focused on the latest in cigarettes, e-cigarettes, hookah, and other current health policies. Expert panelists will share their research in the field. Speakers will include:

  • Dr. Nicole Nicksic is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Center for the Study of Tobacco Products and the Department of Health Behavior and Policy at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her research focuses on e-cigarette marketing, tobacco use behaviors, and implications for tobacco regulatory policy.
  • Mr. William C. Tilburg is Managing Director of the Legal Resource Center for Public Health Policy based at the University of Maryland Carey School of Law. William provides evidence-based legal and policy support to state and local government, and non-government organizations interested in reducing tobacco use, the burden of death, and disease caused by tobacco products.
  • Dr. Rui Shi is a post-doctorate fellow at the University of Maryland’s Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science. In this role, Dr. Shi studies public opinion on current tobacco policy. Dr. Shi is interested in the effects of media and messaging in the contexts of tobacco control and cancer preventions.
  • Dr. Jennifer Pearson is a research investigator at the Schroeder Institute for Tobacco Research and Policy Studies at Truth Initiative. Her background is in social and behavioral sciences, survey methods, policy evaluation, and mixed methods. Her research focuses on how federal tobacco regulation influences consumers’ behavior, with a particular emphasis on e-cigarette use.

This event is open to all and will be held in the School of Public Health on April 4 from 1-2:30pm in the SPH Friedgen Family Student Lounge.
