UPenn: CPHI Summer Institute: GIS and Public Health

The Summer Institute on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Public Health, organized by the Center for Public Health Initiatives (CPHI), will be held June 12-14, 2019. The lecture portion of the training will be in the mornings and the GIS lab portion will be in the afternoons. Overall, at the end of the Summer Institute participants should be able to:
  • Understand a broad range of ways the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can be used
  • Critically analyze maps and research results developed using GIS
  • Learn how to create and analyze thematic maps, geocode addresses, and conduct basic queries
  • Implement a variety of field data collection methods used in GIS such as handheld GPS technology
  • Develop individual research agendas which incorporate GIS methods
