The University of Florida Public Health Student Association joined together with campus groups and local organizations to offer a week of activities educating fellow students about the impact and contributions of public health in our community. Here are highlights of their events:
Monday — Behavioral health
- Yoga on the lawn
- Barre exercises
- UF Counseling and Wellness Center shared information with students about how and where to receive services, as well as information on self-care.
Tuesday — Communicable diseases
- STD trivia game with students
- Condom line-up game with participants racing against the clock to learn the correct steps for putting on a male condom.
- The Alachua County Department provided information on communicable diseases
Wednesday — Environmental health
- Students shared information on preparing for hurricane season
- Alachua County provided tips on recycling and sustainability of community resources
- Starbucks-NextGen Cup Challenge encouraged students to think of ideas that could lead to the development of more sustainable cups
- Gainesville Regional Utilities offered information on water management
Thursday — Injury and violence prevention
- The UF Police Department gave a presentation on personal safety and crime prevention presentation
- Mr. Chuck Smith of the Florida Recovery Center presented on drug abuse and overdose
- Students also received information on swim safety
Friday — Public Health Day and PHHP Research Day
- Undergraduate and graduate students present oral and poster presentations on their research
- Keynote speaker Dr. Mona Fouad, the senior associate dean, diversity and inclusion; professor and director, division of preventive medicine; and director of the UAB Minority Health & Health Disparities Research Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine
