Mr. Tony Mazzaschi, ASPPH senior director, policy and research, conducted a site visit to the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro on January 28. In addition to visiting with faculty, staff, and students, Mr. Mazzaschi delivered a lecture, “Politics and the Future of Public Health Science and Biomedical Research.” He discussed ASPPH’s approach to advocacy on behalf of academic public health, the current federal funding environment, recent changes in the leadership of key Congressional committees, and political and policy issues that may affect the fiscal year 2016 appropriations process. He concluded by discussing opportunities and challenges that faculty might consider regarding their research mission activities. Following his lecture, Mr. Mazzaschi visited with Dean Greg Evans and department chairs to learn about the school’s mission activities aimed at empowering rural communities and underserved populations to address public health issues. Mr. Mazzaschi’s visit was facilitated by Dr. Gulzar H. Shah, associate dean for research at the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health.
