Gregory Hand Stepping Down to Assume New Role at WVU

Dr. Gregory Hand, founding dean of the School of Public Health at West Virginia University, has been named special assistant to the vice president for health sciences.

Dr. Hand stepped down and assumed his responsibilities in June. In this role, Dr. Hand will assist in developing partnerships that enhance the mission and work of health sciences at WVU.

“Dr. Hand has shown himself to be an effective advocate for public health across the state, and I am eager to use his skills toward building partnerships that will change the culture of health for West Virginia,” said Dr. Clay B. Marsh, vice president and executive dean for health sciences.

During Dr. Hand’s tenure as dean, the School of Public Health achieved national accreditation for the first time, and expanded its offerings to include an undergraduate program.

Dr. Jeffrey Coben, who previously served as the interim dean of public health, will return to that role while a search is conducted.
