Healthy People Law & Health Policy Project Report – Nutrition and Weight Status

Law and policy are among the most effective tools to improve health. Many of the greatest public health successes in the United States are the result of legal or policy interventions, such as smoke-free air laws and mandatory seatbelt laws.1 Yet many people may not be aware of the precise impact these interventions and approaches can have on population health.

The Healthy People 2020 Law and Health Policy project aims to help close that gap by showcasing evidence-based legal and policy interventions that impact public health. The project is a partnership between the Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the CDC Foundation, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF).
