Iowa Professor Comments on New Guidelines for Treatment of Blood Cholesterol

The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association recently released new clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of blood cholesterol in people at high risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). The guidelines identify four major groups of patients for whom cholesterol-lowering reductase inhibitors, or statins, have the greatest chance of preventing stroke and heart attacks. The guidelines also emphasize the importance of adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle to prevent and control high cholesterol.
