IUPUI Student Receives Leadership in Public Health Award

Ms. Angelie Kasman was recently honored with the Stephen Jay Award for Leadership in Public Health at the 2017 Indiana Public Health Association Annual Dinner. The award recognizes MPH students (across four statewide programs) who exhibit exemplary public health leadership, scholarship, and practice resulting in the improvement of public health in Indiana.

Ms. Kasman is currently earning a Master of Public Health in environmental health science (EHS) at the Indiana University Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health – Indianapolis and is planning to graduate in Spring 2019. Her goal in pursuing a MPH is to expand upon her current knowledge and learn more around social behavioral science.

Ms. Kasman has a passion for protecting workers’ health and loves that IUPUI’s program affords her the opportunity to further explore ways to accomplish that. She is a young professional working as an industrial hygienist and is excited for the opportunities to come within her program — especially the chance to expand her skillset by interning in an area of EHS outside of her current industry.

A leader indeed, Ms. Kasman says she believes in doing what you can with the skills you possess, as well as finding a way to use what you know to make a difference in your community. In her spare time, she volunteers through the Indiana Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, where she serves as president. She also enjoys volunteering with the United Way’s ReadUp program, helping to increase reading comprehension of elementary students.

When she learned that she was selected for the Stephen Jay Award, Ms. Kasman said she was shocked. “It was an utter surprise to learn that I was selected for the Stephen Jay Award in Public Health Leadership,” she said. “He is an inspirational figure in public health and it was an honor to be nominated.”

She believes there are plenty of inspirational quotes in the world, but she resonates with the mantra, “Life’s a garden, dig it.” In fact, Ms. Kasman said one of the highlights of being recognized for this award, was chatting with Dr. Stephen Jay during dinner. “I’m pretty sure he offered to let me garden some of his land for my pressure canning hobby!”
