Johns Hopkins: American Health Podcast – Making Cities Safer, One Vacant Lot at a Time

In the latest episode of the American Health Podcast, Dr. Charles Branas, chair of Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology, speaks about how reducing blight in urban areas can significantly reduce firearm violence. Dr. Branas delivered the talk featured in this podcast episode at a September 23, 2019, forum, “Policies That Work to Reduce Gun Violence,” co-hosted by the American Public Health Association and the Bloomberg American Health Initiative. The forum included leading experts discussing the most up-to-date evidence on gun violence prevention. Dr. Branas’ slides are available on the American Health Initiative’s website, as are all of the other talks from the forum.

The American Health Podcast is created by the Bloomberg American Health Initiative, a project of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The Initiative works to tackle some of the most pressing challenges to health in the U.S.: addiction and overdose, environmental challenges, obesity and the food system, adolescent health, and violence.
