Johns Hopkins: Mosquito Emoji Approved by Unicode Consortium

A proposed mosquito emoji, conceived with the aim of raising awareness about the deadliest creature on the planet, was approved last week by the Unicode Consortium, the organization that oversees the emoji space. The mosquito emoji was proposed by Ms. Marla Shaivitz, a digital communications manager at the Bloomberg School’s Center for Communication Programs, and Mr. Jeff Chertack, a senior program officer for global health communications at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The mosquito emoji was one of 157 new emojis approved by the Unicode Consortium last week. The insects spread malaria, dengue and yellow fever, to name but a few diseases, which are together responsible for several million deaths and hundreds of millions of cases every year.
