Kentucky: PhD Student Peter Rock Speaks on Syndromic Surveillance Methodology in the Opioid Crisis

Peter Rock, a PhD student in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Kentucky College of Public Health and project manager for the Kentucky Enhanced State Opioid Overdose Surveillance Program at the Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center (KIPRC), spoke at the Kentucky Health Information Exchange Summit on August 16. Rock, a national leader in the field of syndromic surveillance methodology, presented on the potential to use syndromic surveillance data for early detection of spikes in opioid overdoses treated in emergency departments to inform local and state response. Data from KIPRC was used by presenters throughout the summit.
