Dr. Culbertson explained how trauma care tests the ethical theories of market vs. social justice. Historically, hospital systems other than public and academic centers avoided the required high levels of investment in these complex centers. Recent developments have demonstrated that hospitals increasingly view trauma services as desirable and feasible offerings based on community benefit and financial prospects. The ethical balance in question is time lost in transit for the individual to a trauma facility versus systematic dilution of highly skilled and costly services for the broader community as services proliferate.
