Dr. Rebekah Gee, Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) and faculty at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center – New Orleans, Schools of Public Health and Medicine, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine. Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.

At LDH, Dr. Gee oversaw the expansion of Medicaid to cover 400,000 Louisianans who were previously uninsured. Trained as an obstetrician/gynecologist, and a policy expert, Dr. Gee served on the Board of Healthcare Services of the National Academy of Medicine. Prior to becoming the LDH Secretary, Dr. Gee was the Medical Director of Louisiana’s Medicaid program, and the director of the state’s Birth Outcomes Initiative.
