Maryland Professor Urges Greater Physician Commitment to Adolescent Sexual Health

Many doctors do not ask teenagers about sex or sexuality, and those who do spend very little time on the topic, according to a study published in JAMA Pediatrics which investigated physician-adolescent discussions about sexuality. In an editorial accompanying this study, Dr. Bradley O. Boekeloo, professor of behavioral and community health at the University of Maryland School of Public Health, urges primary care physicians to initiate the discussion of sexual topics with teens during routine visits. This commitment is key to improving adolescent sexual health and reducing risk.
