Michigan Alumnus Pilots Study of Michigan’s Felony HIV Disclosure Law

Mr. Trevor Hoppe, a University of Michigan School of Public Health alumnus and a current doctoral student in sociology and women’s studies, analyzed data to find that Michigan’s felony disclosure law is driven by stigma and fear rather than medical science. Mr. Hoppe investigated enforcement of the disclosure law, which makes it a felony for HIV-positive people to engage in a wide range of sexual behaviors without telling their partner they are HIV-positive. The research was published last month in Social Science & Medicine.
