Two communications were sent to the SPH community, the first from Dean Martin Philbert. “To all those who have been personally touched by this tragedy, either through friends, family members, or the very personal experience of a deadly attack on the LGBT community, I want you to know: we see you, we hear you, we stand with you, and we extend our profound sympathy.” Dean Philbert’s message offered suggestions for how we as public health professionals can work to better understand and prevent these tragedies. A second email from SPH Professor Gary Harper offered resources for dealing with secondary trauma and for responding to the issues raised by this tragedy. The University of Michigan issued an experts advisory on the mass shooting in Orlando, with several SPH faculty included. These faculty have been responding to media inquiries and a list of news stories is being compiled. An op ed is also in process. We are polling faculty now to identify research and programs that are underway or in process.
