Minnesota Study Shows Independence Declines Prior to Stroke

Once a stroke happens its severity is partially measured by gauging the loss in physical function and the ability to complete basic daily tasks. However, those losses may not be entirely new, according to a long-term study led by Dr. Benjamin Capistrant, assistant professor at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. His study, “The Disability Burden Associated With Stroke Emerges Before Stroke Onset and Differentially Affects Blacks: Results From the Health and Retirement Study Cohort”, was recently published online in The Journals of Gerontology, Series A: Medical Sciences.
