NYU Examines Secondhand Smoke in Hookah Bars

Drs. Terry Gordon and Michael Weitzman, CGPH professor/associated faculty member and professor in departments of pediatrics and environmental medicine/pediatrics
had an article published in Tobacco Control focusing on the impact of secondhand smoke to Hookah bar workers, Secondhand Smoke Hazardous to Hookah Bar Workers. Dr. Weitzman reported that “public health researchers have new powerful tools at their disposal – Yelp can help to identify trends and pinpoint where these changes are taking place.”

The study also revealed the significant impact of second-hand smoke on hookah bar employees. Participants reportedly “inhaled high levels of carbon monoxide and nicotine while at work and had signs of inflammation associated with airway and lung diseases.”
