Profiles in Public Health

Jennie Toner-Algin

MSPH, Behavioral and Social Science, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

1.       In one sentence, what is public health to you?

Public health is the way forward.

2.       What inspired you to study public health?

I was inspired by the dysfunctional US system and my experience working in other countries’ systems.

3.       What has been the single most rewarding experience of your career/studies so far?

The most rewarding experience has been learning something new every day and also when my three-year-old said “I’m proud of you mom.”

4.       What is the one piece of advice you wish someone had given you when you were starting out in public health?

Try to attend all the speaker series you can, even if you’re busy. They’re great networking opportunities and that’s where you learn about the real world that awaits you after graduation.

5.       What do you think is the biggest challenge that the public health field should be focusing on?

Public health should focus on access, cost and quality to care.
