Society of Toxicology Honors UMass Amherst Postdoctoral Researcher with Two Awards

The Society of Toxicology (SOT) recently honored Dr. Kari Sant, a postdoctoral research associate in Environmental Health Sciences at the UMass Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences, with two awards during their annual meeting in New Orleans, LA. The society is “a professional and scholarly organization of scientists from academic institutions, government, and industry representing the great variety of scientists who practice toxicology in the U.S. and abroad.”

Dr. Sant was the first place winner for the Reproductive and Developmental Toxicology Specialty Section Postdoc Award, a competitive award which honored her for her research poster presented at the meeting. Dr. Sant, who works in the UMass Amherst lab of Assistant Professor of Environmental Health Sciences Alicia Timme-Laragy, presented a poster titled “Perfluorooctanesulfonic Acid (PFOS) Alters Pancreatic Organogenesis and Embryonic Redox Signaling in the Zebrafish, Danio rerio”. The SOT also honored Dr. Sant with the Gabriel L. Plaa Education Award, named in honor of a former SOT president and awarded to a postdoc in honor of their career achievements.

“I’m honored and humbled to have received both of these awards,” says Dr. Sant. “My research wouldn’t be possible without the support of a great group of students, and most importantly, the encouragement of an outstanding mentor, Dr. Alicia Timme-Laragy. I feel that I owe my recent successes to her–she has given me a really ideal training environment and is one of the most kind and generous mentors one could imagine,” she adds.

“There are over 500 postdoctoral members of the Society of Toxicology, and for Kari to win top awards in two different, highly competitive categories, is truly outstanding
