Trump Administration Relents and Transition Officially Begins

This week, the General Services Administration said that President-elect Joe Biden is the “apparent winner” of the November 3 presidential election, clearing the way for the start of the transition and allowing Biden to coordinate with federal agencies on plans for taking over on January 20. Concerned that the transition delay might affect the response to the Covid-19 pandemic, ASPPH issued a statement last week calling for the transition to begin. “In the days ahead – and in the midst of an expanding pandemic – it is critical that we move forward together to address the critical public health challenges facing our country. The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) calls on all elected officials and Americans across the political spectrum to work in good faith to find common ground and to ensure that the transition in Federal leadership is smooth and well-informed. We urgently call on the Trump administration to immediately begin the transition process regarding the response to the Covid-19 pandemic. All Federal scientists and others managing the US response to the pandemic should do everything in their power to assist the Biden transition team to ensure that the Federal response to the Covid-19 pandemic is maximized and serves the interests of all Americans. America faces great challenges in the months ahead to respond to the pandemic and rebuild both our economy and our nation’s public health infrastructure. We will meet these challenges only by working together.”
