ASPPH was relieved when US District Court Judge Allison D. Burroughs announced on Tuesday afternoon that the Trump administration has agreed to drop its plan to deport international college students who will take online courses (only) to study this fall. The announcement came before Judge Burroughs was set to rule on a motion by Harvard and MIT to block the plan while the merits of the case were decided. ASPPH had joined with 70 other associations in filing a friend of the court brief in the case on Monday. ASPPH also issued a statement on the policy change. Although ASPPH is thrilled that this threat has passed, it is possible that the Trump administration will take additional actions against international students as we get closer to the November election. ASPPH is particularly concerned about internal Trump administration discussions about suspending the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, which would negatively affect many of our recent international graduates.
