Mr. Shao presented on the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality-funded project “Estimating Costs of Supporting Safety-Net PCMH Transformation in New Orleans.”

“A Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model is likely to save money and yield better health outcomes and higher patient satisfactory in the long run,” said Mr. Shao. “However, to help a safety-net primary care clinic to transform into a PCMH is quite challenging without external funding. Our research quantifies the resources for the transformation process and has significant policy implications on financial incentives for future healthcare innovation.”

Dr. Lizheng Shi, Regents Professor of Global Health Management and Policy, served as Mr. Shao’s mentor for the project. “This project is conducted through collaboration between SPHTM’s Health Systems Analytics Research Center (HSARC) and the Louisiana Public Health Institute (LPHI),” he said.  “I am pleased to see Mr. Hui Shao has performed elegant econometrics work on this project. Of course he made an excellent presentation at the ISPOR conference.” Dr. Shi is also the co-director of the HSARC.

Two years ago, Qian Shi, another student from the same department, won the same award for a presentation on a health disparity project.
