The Society of Scholars, the first of its kind in the nation, was created in 1967. The society inducts former postdoctoral fellows, postdoctoral degree recipients, house staff, and junior or visiting faculty who have gained marked distinction in their respective fields.

Dr. Lichtveld was recognized for her 35 years of experience in environmental public health including her experience at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention where she designed research tools and scientific policies to guide national environmental health studies in communities living near hazardous waste sites nationwide. The protocols she developed are now part of environmental health programs in all 50 states. She earned her master’s of public health from Hopkins in 1986.

Dr. Lichtveld also gave the inductee lecture, entitled “Of People and Po Boys: The Public Health Implications of the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill.”
