Tulane Team Wins PAN Challenge

A team led by Dr. Lizheng Shi, Endowed Regents Professor in the department of global health management and policy at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, was awarded first place in the PAN Challenge, a competitive challenge put on by the Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation and the American Journal of Managed Care (AJMC). The team won a $10,000 prize.

The paper they submitted examined the impact of the Affordable Care Act on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) 340B program and Prescription Assistance Program in Safety Net clinics across the states. The 340B program requires drug manufacturers to sell outpatient drugs at a discount to safety-net providers serving high numbers of low-income, Medicare, Medicaid, and Supplemental Security Insurance patients.

Doctoral students Ms. Mary K. Wharton and Ms. Alisha Monnette were in Washington, DC last week to present the paper at the PAN Foundation’s Cost-Sharing Roundtable. The paper is expected to be printed in the AJMC March 2018 supplement.
