UAB Assesses Prevalence of Distracted Driving among Passenger Vehicle Drivers

Distracted driving contributes to a large proportion of motor vehicle crashes, yet little is known about the prevalence of distracted driving and the specific types of distracting behaviors. Therefore, Ms. Carrie Huisingh, doctoral student in the department of epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham – along with department colleagues Dr. Russell L. Griffin, assistant professor, and Dr. Gerald McGwin, Jr., professor and vice chair – estimated the prevalence of driver distraction using a roadside observational study design.
