UAlbany Researcher Studies Prevalence of Eating Disorders in Adults: First National Study Since 2007

UAlbany researcher Dr. Tomoko Udo partnered with Dr. Carlos Grilo from Yale University School of Medicine to study the prevalence of eating disorders among adults in the United States, which has not been studied at the national level since 2007. With a change in diagnostic criteria in 2013 that acknowledged binge-eating as an eating disorder and loosened diagnostic criteria, many researchers and clinicians expected higher estimates of eating disorders than found in earlier studies. The study did not match many experts’ predictions; the numbers were relatively consistent with or even lower than the findings of the 2007 study.
