UCLA Biostatistics Professor Honored by American Public Health Association

Dr. Thomas Belin, professor of biostatistics in the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, was invited by the American Public Health Association to deliver the Lowell Reed Lecture during their annual meeting in November in San Diego. The lectureship, which is awarded by the Applied Public Health Statistics Section, recognizes outstanding contributions to the fields of statistics and public health.

Much of Dr. Belin’s work focuses on developing solutions when data that have been gathered for research are incomplete, such as when study participants do not answer all survey questions or when some study measures are not collected on all participants due to resource constraints. Dr. Belin’s presentation, “Providing Actionable Information to Advance Public Health in the Age of Twitter,” also referred to his applied research contributions in areas ranging from summarizing forensic DNA evidence to developing a metric anticipating the extent of political polarization associated with redistricting plans.

In addition to his primary appointment at the Fielding School, Dr. Belin has a joint appointment as professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, where he has worked to disseminate evidence-based depression care in under-resourced communities and to address unmet need for trauma-related care.
