UIC: New Research Weighs Ethics of Genomic Screening

While genomic screening is standard practice for newborn babies, testing is not nearly as clear cut as a standard practice for adults.  Genomic screening cannot take into account environmental factors causing disease, and the rights of adults to not be screened clouds the health picture genomic screening can create.  Dr. Kee Chan, with the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health, has co-authored new research through the National Academy of Medicine outlining the ethical considerations of genomic screening and a roadmap for health providers to maximize the benefits screening can provide.
