UIC Receives Grant to Study on Soda Tax

The Chicago Tribune reports on a grant award from Bloomberg Philanthropies to the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) to study soda taxes in Illinois and California. Dr. Lisa Powell, professor and director of health policy and administration in the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health, leads the study and is quoted in the article. “Taxes like this may be good at raising revenue, but do they have an impact on public health?” Dr. Powell said. “The whole point is to look at this objectively, over time, in order to understand its true impact on all fronts, from public health to effect on the economy. … At the end of the day, you want the best policy possible.”
