Dr. Barry Popkin, University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health’s W.R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of nutrition, continued to make big news in 2013 as an advocate against the extra calories packed into prepared foods and beverages in the U.S. In 2009, more than 40 retailers, nonprofits, and food and beverage manufacturers established the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, which is working with the Partnership for a Healthier America to reduce childhood obesity rates by 2015. Sixteen companies, ones which together manufacture 36 percent of all calories in packaged foods and beverages, further pledged to remove one trillion calories from foods in stores by 2012 and 1.5 trillion by 2015. Dr. Popkin and others at UNC tracked the changes and will publish a study about the process later this year.
