UNC Finds Human-Caused Environmental Problems Increase Toxic Algal Blooms

Freshwater phenomena called harmful algal blooms (HABs) have resulted in increasing toxicity to plants and animals over the last several decades. In an effort to better understand the process and decrease the abundance of the blooms, scientists study the impact of climate change and nutrient-rich material in the water upon the blooms’ development and spread.
